Why is achieving a healthy weight important?
The number of people who are overweight or obese in the United States is on the rise.  Individuals with excess body fat are at higher risk for a wide array of diseases and conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, gallstones, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, osteoarthritis, and sleep apnea.  Weight loss in overweight or obese individuals has shown to lower risk factors for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain types of cancer. What is my risk level? (learn about the risk)
Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference are used to assess risk for developing disease.  BMI is determined using height and weight.  A healthy BMI is 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m2.  Overweight is classified as a BMI of 25 to 29 kg/m2.  Obesity means a BMI greater than 30 kg/m2.  Increased abdominal fat is associated with increased risk for disease.  Higher risk is associated with a waist circumference greater than 35 inches for women and greater than 40 inches for men.  Your consultant will give you your BMI and risk level.
